Now entering our final phase of the Tanglewood project, phase 3, we are getting anxious to see the final result and compare to before and after. The last step is to install the EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer (M-class) rubber). This is what the kids will be actually running and playing on. This is also the portion of the playground surface that can be completely customized to your facilities preference from colors to designs.

We have put hop scotch panels in the layout and even had a few places want logos implemented into the design. EPDM pour in place rubber is an excellent surfacing choice for facilities with a keen eye for safety, low maintenance, and life cycle cost savings. Everything has to be ship shape and always exceedingly good and going further into perfection as an ending result which is why always have my surfacing experts handle the job so it’s done right the first time.

So my guys grab their wheel barrels, knee pads, and tools needed to spread everything out level and even for the full 4500 sq. ft. course. These guys worked hard and they really enjoyed seeing the finishing product. Installation of the 4500 sq. ft. base course and EPDM wear course, under ideal weather conditions, would take 4 days. Unfortunately, we had a spell of cold weather that slightly delayed the project for a week. For installation of the pour in place wear course, minimum temperatures of 40 degrees and rising are needed. Moisture also negatively affects the installation efforts.

The people at Forsyth County were excited to have the new pad and look forward to 15 years of a maintenance free safety surface.

After seeing the shape Tanglewood playground surface was in I was very excited to get this remolding started so they would have a nice, fresh, and appealing look as well as reassuring a safe surface. First thing we needed to do was get rid of the entire old surface so we brought in the Bobcat. Boom, boom, boom and things were really moving along smoothly. The guys really got a good work out with this one because we removed a total of 30 tons of rubber which is 4500 sq. ft.! Kept us busy and that’s just how we like it.

There was an existing swing that needed some repair and needed to be reset that we took care of. It’s very important to us to make sure every single little detail is noticed and evaluated before moving forward not only for the benefit of the facility but most importantly, the safety of the kids.

Now after getting the swing to perfection, we began to prepare the asphalt’s surface to effectively receive the new rubber surface. This is something that needs to be done accurately to avoid any unwanted maintenance at a sooner than expected date. We definitely don’t want any sitting water hanging around so our next step was to prevent that problem from occurring.

We installed French drains around the outside asphalt base which is very popular and effective. This is basically digging out around the base and filling it with gravel that is around a perforated corrugated pipe and covered with commonly used filter fabric. This whole phase of our project took us two days to complete and I am very pleased to say everything went as planned.

Our background in construction and safety drives us to building the absolute safest playground possible. Often time’s budgets will dictate what we can and can’t use for the surface of a playground, but instances where we are asked to use a surface we are not confident in, we decline the project. Jon and I said from the very first conversation of starting Creative Playscapes, if it’s not safe, we won’t do it. We stand by that and will never view child safety any other way.

The playground surface or play area is typically where most injuries occur, the incorrect surfacing for the play structures involved will escalate the opportunity for injury. Jon is the master at determining what playground surface materials we use; he cringes at the thought of concrete unless it’s a walkway. Sand & gravel is another playground surface he is very particular in placing. Some things just naturally work well together (like me and Jon) while others just invite issues. Jon has researched the variety of playground surfacing products available and understands what is safe and which surface should be installed with every play structure we install. I depend a lot on Jon and his expertise; he has never let me or a customer down!

Artificial Turf

Rubber Mulch

PIP (pour in place consolidated surfaces)

200 thousand children visit an emergency room each year from playground related injuries that number increases to 500 thousand if doctor visits are included. We strive to reduce that number by installing the safest playgrounds and surfaces possible.
